There may well therefore have been nothing

very mysterious in the connection between Cheung Hoi and Stanton, although the latter in paragraph 15 of his very scurrilous statement of the 26th. August affects to be un- able to understand why the two names should have been men- tioned in connection with each other in the course of the

enquiry that has been held.

It is not the fact that Yeung Fat was treat-

ed in Gaol as to accommodation and food as he describes, 5

I can produce the Principal Warder who saw him served with the evening meal on the night of his admission. Yeung Fat

has deliberately lied on these points.

Paragraph 15. I do not deny that I did every

thing legitimately in my power to induce Tang Chung & Yeung

Fat to give evidence against the Petitioner and against cer-

tain other European Police Officers. I offered to recommend

that their Banishment Orders should be cancelled if they

told the truth. But I deny that I ever held out to them any

hope of being re-instated in the Police Force or that I

threatened them with criminal prosecution.

I am convinced that they were the most blame -

worthy among the Chinese for the frightful corruption that

has been brought to light, and I woula no more recommend
